Aug. 6, 2014;
Having spent the past week working on the 'business' side of art, I have to get back to this icon that has been patiently waiting for me. Just have base clouds blocked in at this point and built up the gold size base (over the red bole)
I also started the next totem last Friday and need to get back to it as well. This one is a 16"x16" close up detail.

Not a great pic but progressed on the St. Pelagia icon, with mid tones. It was time to further sand the red surfaces in preparation for the gold leaf which I will do tonight. After that, it will have to sit for at least a day for it to be dry enough to burnish and seal. I use an oil gold size.
While waiting for that, I will work on the small totem painting. I'm really anxious to start on my next project once these two pieces are completed; a 36"x36" of the Brown Bear from the Bear Pole totem at Capilano Suspension Bridge. The image is striking and yet the story is of a bear nurturing a blind man by bring him food.

No matter how many icons I've done through the years, my poor fingers (especially my thumbs) still take such abuse from all the fine sanding. Inevitably, the edges of my thumb nails get swollen and sore, and sometimes, infected. Suffering for one's art. :-)
I hadn't planned on getting the gold leafing done today. It just worked out that way. Just need to let it set and dry before I can handle it. More pictures to come.
Initial clean up of the gold leaf this morning. All ok. Now to let it sit a day before a final pass with the sable brush and sealing.
Now back to he Totem painting while waiting.

The gold leaf is done and sealed. I had to do the halo and Greek inscription before the sealing.
The icon is now at a mid-way point. Still lots to do in general and then the face, hands and hair are the last (which are still in their base colours).

The St. Pelagia icon has been completed. Just need to varnish it and let it set for a few days before it gets shipped to Calgary on Monday.
